WHEN REID AND KAT ARRIVED at Room 311, Reid discovered that the door was ajar with the “do not disturb” sign hanging from the doorknob. It was dark inside the room. Reid gently pushed the door open. He heard the muffled sound of someone crying.

The smell was horrible and Reid recognized it from working crimes scenes during his days as a police officer.

“I think you better go and get the police,” Reid said softly to Kat. It was a smell of a fresh body that had been opened up.

“No way. I’m not leaving you,” Kat said as she pulled out the digital camera from her purse. The fear rose up in her, but it was paired with an exhilaration she hadn’t felt since she had been a war correspondent.

As Reid pushed open the door, the light from the hallway fell on Chelsea, who was still bound in duct tape to the chair in the corner of the room. Her head hung forward. Even though her brown hair obscured her face, Reid immediately recognized his daughter.

“Oh my god! Chelsea!” he shouted.

Reid ran to Chelsea, ignoring the horrific spectacle on the bed, which was still half-hidden in shadow, focusing only on his daughter.

As Reid knelt on the floor next to his daughter, he saw that a strip of tape covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Carefully stroking her hair with one hand, he gently pulled at the strip of duct tape, not wanting to pull it off all at once. He noticed the camera flashes behind him as Kat took numerous photographs of the crime scene.

“OK, I’m going to get the police downstairs,” she called out, finished with collecting the photographs she needed for her story, and she ran from the room.

Reid was overwhelmed by sight of the terror coming through his daughter’s eyes as he finished peeling back the duct tape from her mouth.

“Are you hurt? Do you need an ambulance?”

“I’m not hurt,” she whispered. “Dad, you shouldn’t have come...this is worse than you can possibly imagine. We’re in great danger here.”

“Don’t try to talk now. The police will be here in a second and we can get you out of this chair.”

A moment later, the room was instantly crowded with police officers who had been congregating at the crime scene downstairs. One of them gagged and almost vomited when he smelled the insides of the body splayed on the bed.

“I have to get out of this room,” Chelsea said, and Reid could see the anxiety and panic rising in her eyes. She had been bound to the chair for several hours, and Reid could smell that she had wet herself from fear.

“Help me get her out of this duct tape,” Reid shouted to one of the officers. The officer had a small utility knife that he used to free Chelsea from her bindings.

Now that the lights were on in the room, Reid could see that the young girl on the bed had been butchered as completely as the
